JOb Opening: native plant technician

Green Star has a part-time opening, 16-24 hours per week, for a Native Plant Technician.  The ideal candidate will be able to think and operate independently but relate and communicate well with others, and be passionate about working in nature to improve the environment.  On the job training will be provided.

Tasks will include:

  • Assist in plant propagation tasks as part of a team, including field-collecting plants onsite and offsite, propagating, and maintaining healthy stocks.

  • Harvest, prepare and store seed, both wild-collected and nursery-grown, as part of a team.

  • Prepare and load plants for delivery.

  • Farm maintenance including mowing and line trimming, removing invasive species, and keeping farm equipment and tools in good working order.

  • Other related tasks as needed.

Wage: $15 hourly

Education and experience:

  • A High School diploma or GED is required. A degree in Ecology, Biology, Natural Resource Management, Horticulture, or similar, is preferred. Two years demonstrated experience in outdoor maintenance work in a farm, park, or similar setting is preferred.

  • Experience and familiarity with Texas native plants, including wetland plants, is a bonus. Training will be provided.

Requirements:

  • Heat tolerance and experience with outdoor work is required.   Must be able to work outdoors including the extremes of summer and winter.

  • You must have your own transportation to the farm in Alvin.

  • Ability to take direction and work with others as a crew.

  • Ability to lift loads up to 20 pounds repetitively

  • Ability to walk up to two miles.

  • Must have tolerance of wet and muddy conditions.

  • Must be 18 or older.

About the company:  Green Star Wetland Plant Farm LLC is based in Alvin TX, 30 miles south of Houston. We provide native wetland plants for wetland restoration, green infrastructure, and landscape projects. Our company is seven years old, and rooted in over 20 years’ experience in wetland plant propagation and landscape design. Green Star plants can be seen at Houston Botanic Garden, Memorial Park Eastern Glades, Houston Zoo’s Texas Wetland Exhibit, and sites across Texas. save the date: Wetland Plant Intern 2027

Although we won’t have an internship this year, we hope to offer summer trainings next year. Tentative for June 2027, Green Star will have a Wetland Plant summer internship for university/college students preparing for a career in Environmental Sciences, Natural Resource Management, Agriculture, Horticulture, or related fields. Interns will gain hands-on experience identifying, collecting and propagating native wetland plants. Visits to natural wetlands and constructed wetland sites are included in the experience.
